I have had one similar project for one of my client. I've done it successfully with below approach.
I'm assuming you already have an identifier (imageID) which will identify each images in your data source. If so then follow below steps:
1. First you need to host your all images somewhere in a web portal. In my case I uploaded all the images in Tableau Web Server. Once you've uploaded the images you can have URL of each image which you can access in any browser.
2. Then create a field in your source which will have URL string of your tableau web server. You can concat the web server URL string and imageID just like above.
3. Drag the concat field from in details shelf of your worksheet.
4. Create a dashboard URL action using that field and test it in a web object.
Let us know if this help.
Thanks for the prompt reply.
A creative solution. However, whenever I print a dashboard using this method, the image (URL object) disappears. Any workaround?

Difficult to say what might be the reason as I've never faced such issue at my end.
Try to download the dashboard as ppt (option available from v2019.4)/.pdf/.png and check.
What I did eventually is publishing the whole workbook on one computer every time I save it, so I could download the latest workbook from my other computer that contains all the images and work from there.
