Different story. No "domain" for the machine to join in that case, so no requirement.
It's little more fiddly to configure and set up properly (AD just tends to work out of the box) but definitely do-able and supported on current releases.
When windows server is not in the domain as your AD server, you can't select AD/LDAP during your configuration process. The other way is, get your AD exposed as ADFS. It helps making your AD usable out of that particular domain. While you are doing the installation, you have to select 'local' for identity store. Once the installation is complete, you can configure SAML to make use of this ADFS.
With this process, your Tableau server needn't to be in domain and your requirement can be achieved.

I'm assuming I would still need to select Active Directory when initially configuring Tableau Server in order to configure using openldap. Is this correct.
