How to use a data source only accessible to the server, not the developer?

    Eric Woltermann

      Dear community,

being a total Tableau newbie, I immediately stumbled across a problem I cannot find a solution for in any documentation or community. I need to use a data source which I cannot access from my desktop using my own domain credentials. The Tableau Server however should be able to access the source, as it lives in a more privileged subnet and uses a different domain account.

Is there a way of adding a data source "as the server" from Tableau Desktop?

      Thanks in advance,

      Eric

      EDIT:

I tried to move the post to the "Data Sources & Connections" category, however that isn't listed in the form...

          Hi Eric,

Based on my understanding, you want to use an Online/Server published Data-source to build a Tableau report, self-serve option for you and your team. Yes, it is possible to do that!

Once the data steward designs a data connection it can be published as an extract or a live connection to the Server. Team View/Edit/Create access can be controlled using Server Permissions by the Server/Site Admin

If you like what you see here, let me know and we can point you to the materials Tableau has published on this topic!

          Thanks,

          Ojoswi
