Kendra, currently only measures will generate a horizontal scrollbar, not dimensions. I don't know of a work around for this. There is an idea for exactly this issue that is currently under review in the ideas forum.
an often better way to show the 'shortened' data is using a tooltip: instead of horizontal scrolling people can just hover on the value and see the complete text, and maybe also enriched with extra data (like category)
In the next version of Tableau you will be able to show/hide sheets - so you have more space for your filter, but are able to hide it when you don't need it.

Thank you so much! For some reason, the tooltip does not appear. From what I have read this is because I am trying to tool-tip a dimension. Do you know anything about this? I would love to have a tool-tip show the full title, but as it sits now it only appears when I hover over a measure not dimension.
Kendra, the issue isn't that it's a dimension, it's that the text is a header vs a mark. Only marks have tooltips.
Go to your article listing viz, drag title of article to text. Then right click the title of article in rows, de-select show headers.

can you share your workbook - or create a 'mockup' so I can have a look at it?
