# how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

its insane that tableau cant calculate a simple excel sum on columns and we need to search the web for a solution ....

i want to sum the total of the column B , C , D

this SUM([NEW_USD_Notional_Amount]) option is not the one im looking for , i just want to sum the column from row 1 to the end like a simple excel sum ! ( just like total , but total isnt working on aggregated column )

• ###### 1. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

Hi,

I could not find any workbook attached. But if I understand correctly, you would like to sum column B, C & D. is there a reason you can not use + the columns together? So, something like this:

[NEW_USD_COLLAPSED_Notional ]+[NEW_USD_Notional_Amount]+[New_Total]

If this is not what you are looking for, please attach the workbook and describe the desired solution a bit more clear

• ###### 2. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

i need a total of all the values in NEW USD COLLAPSED  ...not a sum of column 1 + column 2 etc ...but the values in a single column from 1 to the end row 1+row 2 + row 3 etc ....till the end of the specific column

thx

• ###### 3. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

that was not clear from your first meesage ... understood the same thing, that you want to sum columns (as in measures).

Is the below result what you are looking for? ... and by the way, you just need to understand there is a different way of doing things than excel, it's not that it doesn't work

where Total is SUM([Base Amount]) + SUM([NEW USD Notional Amount]) + SUM([NEW USD COLLAPSED Notional]) if you want to summ columns (Measures) and not rows (values for a measure)

• ###### 4. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

and because it's Tableau, you have multiple ways to do it:

Column Totals To Top e.g.

• ###### 5. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

yes this is what i want to do , but i cant do it in my workbook , its a postgres database not a simple excel , and the values are aggregated values ...

i can try and attach the workbook

• ###### 6. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

grand total isnt working on aggregated values , thats why i asked the question in the first place

• ###### 7. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

if you can add an extract of your workbook that would be great

• ###### 8. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

here is the workbook

thx for the help

• ###### 9. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

Does this not give you what you want?

This gives you a total of the column [NEW_USD_COLLAPSED_Notional] ?

• ###### 10. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

no its not my result !!!

see the excel spreadsheet , you entered the right result but i didnt get the answer using the function you added .

• ###### 11. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

Well I got it:

• ###### 12. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

So

1.

OR use instead of TOTAL() function an LOD (level of detail calculation) :

{ SUM([NEW USD Notional Amount]) }  this LOD defined by {} will compute SUM of all your rows for NEW USD

• ###### 13. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

i just cant execute SUM(base Amount) etc ...and not on the other , if im doing that im getting in each cell X*4 , the sum of rows of the specific select from the database ...

attaching the result

thx

• ###### 14. Re: how to sum / total an aggregated column ?

i really cant understand why in my workbook its just wont work ...its giving me the total sum of results from the DATABASE attaching again the workbook
