# How to make scatter plot for showing the relation between performances of two different period?

Hi everyone,

I would be very happy if someone can explain to me how to make a scatter plot to show the performance of the SAME people for Fall 2017 and Fall 2018. For simplicity, one of my axes should be FALL 2017 and other FALL 2018. The measure will be TERM GPA. But the challenging part is that the graph should show only the same people's TERM GPA. In my case, these are LAURA, TED and MAURINE. • ###### 1. Re: How to make scatter plot for showing the relation between performances of two different period?

This doesn't really make sense for a scatter plot. A scatter plot shows two measures, one on each axis, but you only have a single measure. You could, however, turn GPA into two separate measures, one for each semester. Is that what you're looking for? If so, start by creating the two measures:

GPA 2017

// GPA for Fall 2017 only.

IF [Semester]="Fall 2017" THEN

[Term GPA]

END

GPA 2018

// GPA for Fall 2018 only.

IF [Semester]="Fall 2018" THEN

[Term GPA]

END

Then you could use these as your two measures and plot it like this: Because the scatter plot needs non-null values in each measure, it will naturally only plot those with both 2017 and 2018 GPAs.

See attached workbook.

Dear Ken,

Thanks for answering my question. That was exactly what I did - to separate into 2 measures. But the thing is that I do not know how to choose people who studied both in FALL2017 and FALL2018. In the data I showed it is easy, we can filter it. But how to filter out the same people out of 20000 students without choosing their ID/NAME one by one? Is there a formula for that?

• ###### 3. Re: How to make scatter plot for showing the relation between performances of two different period?

The process I showed will automatically do it because it requires that both measures have a non-null value. So, if a student has a 2017 GPA, but no 2018 GPA, his/her 2018 GPA measure will be NULL and it will not be plotted. Does that make sense?

Hi,

Gantt chart will also be good option to represent such kind of data. Take a look. To demonstrate the chart I have downloaded the workbook which Ken has attached. Let us know if this help.

Thanks, Mahfooj, but it is good for a few people. Since I have 20000+ people I cannot list/filter them one by one

Can you share the workbook?

• ###### 8. Re: How to make scatter plot for showing the relation between performances of two different period?

True! In that case scattered plot will be good.
