I got this to work by placing a Set Action within a Table Calculation - lookup() function. I'm sort of surprised to get it working but check out the attached updated workbook and let me know if you have questions. Set Actions are a new function in Tableau and unlike an Action filter, the Set Action can be used in a Calculated field so in this case, I wrapped the function in a lookup() function and defined the Table Calc manually using the Advanced calculation settings. Now be aware that any change of the Dimensions in the view will break the table calculation and it will have to be redefined.
I have not been able to find a way to retain the color from the left hex graph into the right graph so maybe someone else smarter than me figures that out.
Jonathan Drummey - have you embedded a set action into a table calc like this? Pretty cool functionality that I have not been able to do before.

Yep, I have, it's a great use of the feature! FYI "set actions for filtering results w/out affecting table calcs" is #7 in this fantastic set of examples by Bethany Lyons: 8 analytic concepts to express with Tableau set actions | Tableau Software.
Thank you for the wonderful idea. Its working now.
