    Silent installtion of Tableau Reader

    Mark Notley

Hello, it's a been a few years since this question got asked as far as I can tell so hopefully you don't mind me raising it again!

I have been able to download the Tableau Reader .exe, extract the MSI and confirm that runs fine manually. However the /q switch does not work for me, nor does the default /qn etc. Example installation attempt:

      msiexec.exe /i "tableau-setup-rdr.msi" ALLUSERS=1 /qn /norestart /log output.log or

      msiexec.exe /i "tableau-setup-rdr.msi" /q

That first string is generated by PDQ Deploy which links to the MSI and copies / runs it fine. However I always get a generic MSI Error 1603. The credentials I am using work fine for other MSI deployments, as do the switches I'm using. I've looked over the MS description of that error and non of the potential causes seem to apply.

Is there some other non-standard switch for the Reader MSI I need to be using?

      Many thanks

          Hello Mark,

Thanks for posting in the Tableau Community!

Have you continued to have this issue with the silent installation of the Tableau Reader? Or were you able to find a solution to the unexpected error? I was unable to find other reports of the error occurring.

Please reply with the solution or workaround found to better help other users that might find this discussion in this future.

          Hope this helps!

          Cheers,

          Byrne, Patrick
