Possible to split some data with a calculated field?

    Justin Pulley

The attached file has the data; it has a column for start, end and the day that start and end was created.
what I am trying to see if I can make happen is the following:

a column with the max create date, a column with the start date associated with that latest create date, but then I need a column that has the Previous date to the MAX create date in that column with the associated start date.  Can anyone think of what the calculations are that will need to be done to do that?

I can't find anything that is close to what I am trying to do on google either.

            Hi Justin,

I think you might get more of a response if you were to mock up what the expected result should look like...too often, many of us try to interpret the expected outcome, but fail because of not enough context.

            Thx, Don

It's pretty hard to mock something up when you can't get tableau to do the data part of this and pull the piece you want.  Then if you could do that you wouldn't be looking for help to setup the dashboard.

I can try in excel I guess.

              IDRegionBuildPrevious Create DateStartEndLastest Create DateStartEnd
              4214ABCABC5010/13/2017 22:264/1/20185/1/20185/8/2018 23:025/1/20186/1/2018

so in the sample data I picked out the one that changed.  I need to show the previous Create Date and the associated start/end and the Latest Create Date and the start/end

                Hi Justin,

Thank you. Sometimes the visual is all we need to help us along...it really saves time on the back and forth for the expectations.  Attached is a 2018.2 workbook and below is the screenshot result of several Table Calculations and a filter to bring the resulting changed row into the view.

I'll be handling some clients for the rest of the week but if you have any other concerns, will try to get back to you by Thursday at the latest.  Thx!  Don

How does this work if there are multiple previous create dates and not just two?

also my single line example was apparently bad, I figured you would use the previously supplied sample data file.  As right now anything with only a single create date is filtered.  I can't do that have to show it if there is only one as well.

                  so to expand my example:

                  IDRegionBuildPrevious Create DateStartEndLastest Create DateStartEnd
                  4214ABCABC5010/13/2017 22:264/1/20185/1/20185/8/2018 23:025/1/20186/1/2018

                  6103DEFBAH0541/18/2018 18:337/1/20187/1/20181/18/2018 18:337/1/20187/1/2018

Right so this is why I am having a hard time.

                  Basically I need to say:

Check and see if there is a previous create date; if there is show me that and the start/end for that.  If there isn't, just show me the only available value.  What this eventually will have to do is say okay, now that I know there was a previous create date I want to know the date diff between the previous start and the new start.  Ultimately trying to understand how different projects are being pulled in and pushed out.

I am closer than before.  I have all of them showing now; I am now trying to make sure that in the last column I am only showing the latest end date.  I am getting the  ... after the date.

                      Hi Justin,

Great! Good to know you're getting where you need to be and that I could help.  If you're only seeing '...' then drag the column wider to see the values or if you're seeing the data bunched up in your table, then add more columns:

Go to Analysis --> Table Layout --> Advanced

Then add as many columns as you need to display in all 3 of the columns layout boxes:

Will be available to do so more on Thursday if needed. Thx, Don
