Does that Sorting Matters in Tableau Prep? It is a Preparation Tool, not Visualization Tool . Ultimately you are doing Visualization in Tableau using this data, so You should not Bother sorting datasource.
I am creating this data source for others to use. Those data always need to display in that order. I'd rather it default that way. Tableau Prep offers sort by ascending and descending alphabetically and also by count - so why not manual?
Cindy..as I said, It is Preparation Tool, You Need Sorting in Your View ,so you can do That in Tableau.
I may not have caught the gist,
and this may be more work and maintenance than desired,
but I was wondering about creating a calculated field in Prep
with the order:
CASE [Student Class]
WHEN "Dual Enrollment" THEN 1
WHEN "Freshmen" THEN 2
This new field could be placed on the Detail shelf,
and then the [Student Class] could be set by the new Order field ascending.
I not sure that a default "sort by calculated field" can be set in Prep.
swaroop.gantela Thank you for your idea. It appears that it must not be possible in Tableau Prep. Since Prep provides ascending and descending, I thought it might be feasible somehow. It's such a short list, once I'm actually creating a dashboard in Desktop - I'll just set the manual sort as the default and I'm good to go - not a big deal. We have actually used the numbering idea in SAS for many years to force it to sort properly. I was just hoping for a way so that if a new user uses a server based data set, it would automatically sort for them. They will just have to manually sort as well.
Thanks again for your solution!
