SQL error messages that occur in Initial SQL are not returned by Tableau Server and that is causing us pain.
For some extracts, we use Initial SQL to execute stored procedures into a temp table. We then select * from temp table in the custom SQL. We do this for optimization reasons. We are finding that if Initial SQL fails for any reason, the error message in Tableau Server will only ever be the below error which doesn't tell us anything.
com.tableausoftware.nativeapi.dll.DataSourceException: [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]Invalid object name '#tableau'.
Has anyone who has encountered this come up with a workaround to catch the Initial SQL error messages? @Tableau, is there any plans to address this?
Do you have any other SQL tool to test your queries with against the database instead of relying on Initial SQL? There is not a lot of support for Initial SQL since it's so wide open.
Did you find a solution since this post was originally created?
