Can I use two different versions of SQL Server as data sources?

I use two different versions of SQL Server, but I can only access the data from one of them on the Tableau Server. Those SQL Server versions are Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP3) - 10.50.6000.34 (X64) and Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (SP1-CU7-GDR) (KB4057119) - 13.0.4466.4 (X64).

When I say that I can't access the data, the data only becomes inaccessible when publishing a workbook to the Tableau Server. I am using Tableau Server Version: 10.3.1 (10300.17.0615.2100) 64-bit Windows. The 2008 R2 SQL server is the version with which I am having trouble. The data is available in Tableau reporting when I am working from the desktop. When I try to access that same report on the Tableau Server, the image below is what I see.

Does anyone know of a fix for the problem I am having?
