Tableau Workbooks performance degraded after upgrading from 9.3 to 10.5

    Rohan Singh

      Hi All,

We upgraded from 9.3 to 10.5 version of Tableau. We have Tabjolts results pre and post upgrade. The performance has declined and I am trying to find out the reason for it. Below is our configuration for Tabjolt:

We add think time to our Tabjolt tests as mentioned below:

      thinkTimeBetweenTest: 15000

      thinkTimeBeforeInteraction: 60000

And below is the calc for 'Avg. test Response Time'

      Sum(

IF [Test Name] = 'Interact Viz Test' THEN ([time_request]-75000)/1000

ELSEIF  [Test Name] = 'View Viz Test' THEN ([time_request]-15000)/1000

      ELSE 0 END)/COUNT([time_request])

I have attached the Excel with Tabjolt results pre and post upgrade.

We upgraded to 10.5.4 which has the patch for 9.x workbooks slow performance after upgrading to 10. But still, the issue persists.

We have 2 Vizql and 2 Cache Processes for our Server.

Does anyone faced the same issue or have any idea how to resolve it.

      Thanks

          Hi Rohan,

I have seen many  posts related to the same.

Slow response (from Hyper AND Tableau Support)

          Tableau 10.5 Slow Visualization Performance

          Response from Tableau Team

Hyper does not have any optimizing required. If you are seeing slower than expected performance, please open up a case with Tableau Support and share a copy of the workbook - they can assist.

I think you should share a copy with the Tableau Support team after raising a support case , that is the best you can do and others have done.

          Ritesh

Rohan, My 10.5 is not faster than my 10.4  from render time perspective. Here is known issues that I had to deal with. Not sure if you encountered any of those:

            1. Dashboard on server hangs on the spinning cycle while involving X-DB joins with multiple Excel files
              • Issue: Although it works on Desktop but V10.5 server spins.
              • Workaround: Create extracts in V10.5 Desktop and re-publish the workbook. If there is extract before, it was .TDE, recreate extract in V10.5 Desktop will create .Hyper extract which works.
            2. Dashboard on serverhangs on the spinning cycle while involving X-DB joins between MySQL live connection and Excel or among MySQL live connection
              • Issue: Although it works on Desktop but V10.5 server spins.
              • Workaround:Removing the Excel cross-db join prevented the issue. Another option is not to use live connection of MySQL but use extracts instead.
            3. Server "Unknown Error” or “Logic Exception error" when select filters of workbooks have X-DB joins between MySQL live connection and Excel
              • Issue: Unknown.
              • Workaround:Removing the Excel cross-db join prevented the issue. This may not be the best workaround but it works.
            4. Incremental extract refresh data problems - no matter error or not, applies to ALL Incremental extracts
              • Issue: Tableau upgrade does not handle incremental extracts. Some incremental extracts failed others did not fail but data is wrong. This issue happens for every upgrade.
              • Solution:No This is almost the same for every server upgrade. Recreate extracts.
            5. Workbooks with many calculations could be slower
              • Issue: Calculations are not present in hyper extracts unless you select a special option in Tableau Desktop to materialize. Otherwise they are calculated at runtime by Hyper. "If the Compute Calculations Now option was used in a .tde extract using an earlier version of Tableau Desktop, certain calculated fields were materialized and therefore computed in advance and stored in the extract. If you upgrade the extract from a .tde extract to a .hyper extract, the previously materialized calculations in your extract are not included.
              • Workaround: You must use the [Compute Calculations Now] option again to ensure that materialized calculations are a part of the extract after the extract upgrade." For more information, see Materialize Calculations in Your Extracts.

Thanks, Ritesh. We have already raised a ticket with Tableau Support and they have escalated it to higher levels. But they have mentioned it will take some time. So meantime we ourselves are trying to fix it.

Thanks, Mark Wu . We are not using any X-DB joins with Excel nor we are having any lot of calculations in our workbooks. Still, we will try to create new Hyper extracts, as while upgrading we took backup of 9.3. Will try it let you know.
