Sounds like something has gone haywire with a tag in the XML. The following post has some ideas which may help: Updated to 10.1, workbook won't work (Error: expected end of tag 'width')
Some other things I'd try are:
1) Save as a previous version, then see if you can open and publish it.
2) Try opening with a newer version of Tableau.
Certainly doesn't hurt to submit a case to Tableau Support as well.
Let me know if any of those work.
Following up on this one. Let us know how we can help further.
Hey has this been resolved yet? I am facing the exact same issue and support has been pretty unhelpful (was told to search for the answer myself).
I am using Tableau Desktop 2018.2 (have tried with 2018.1 as well) and Tableau Online (instead of Tableau Server).
Any luck or updates on this? Just got the same error on 10.5.3 and server 10.5.3
I ended up rewriting my sql to avoid this error.
What did you have a change about your sql to avoid this error?
I'm having a similar problem. I've written a custom sql query that works fine in Tableau Desktop. When I go to publish I get the Structure of Tag Error.
I have had two issues now that are very close to this.
1. Renaming fields in desktop. I had to rewrite my sql to
Select Field_name - to Select Field_name as "Field Name"
Do not let tableau rename the field for you.
2. Similar issue to the above is Type of Variable. I have had to be very careful about setting the type in tableau desktop. Changing string to number or decimal to whole number.
Hope this helps.

I discovered my issue was with the use of the SQL command "INNER JOIN".
I rewrote my SQL to no longer user INNER JOIN. I also informed Tableau support of the bug with INNER JOIN. Hopefully they will fix it eventually.
Hopefully this will help anyone else experiencing the same issue.
