Recommended data sources are for machine learning, these are published data sources.
What you are trying to do is to connect to tableau server database (workgroup database).
What exactly is your requirement....if you are trying to built a dashboard from a published datasource and u know the joins between the tables then u can apply the joins yourself otherwise u can leverage the recommendations engine of tableau.
I believe you misunderstood the question, the question was never about How to use Published Data Source, to your point(its confusing)"published datasource and u know the joins between the tables then u can apply the joins yourself otherwise u can leverage the recommendations engine of tableau." ... .
Note: When you have a Published Data source and building a dashboard on top of it, the Explorer / Developer wouldn't get an opportunity to see the underlying joins (please check).
The question is :
1. at what stage we get to see these Recommended Data Sources listed?
2. in our org we havent had an opportunity to publish data sources yet, however the recommended Data Sources would they comeup right after we start publishing the Certified Data Sources?
3. again another question is about Recommended tables (this has nothing to do with certified datasources) hence at what stage we start seeing the inputs from the Tableau?

certified data sources are the ones that are certified by humans(site administrators) manually.Obviously the site administrator would certify a published datasource which he can see online.
coming to the joins part before publishing the data source the joins are defined at tableau desktop level.Recommended data sources is available from tableau 10.3 version. Not sure what version of tableau are you using in your Org.
Recommended data sources and published data sources are interlinked with each other.
please check this link Introducing recommended tables and smart joins in Tableau 10.3 | Tableau Software
once you publish a datasource then the tableau recommendation engine internally uses machine algorithms to recommend one from the available published datasources.if you don't see recommendations thenthe datasource connector does not support recommendations.Attaching screenshots highlighted. Please check.Hope it is clear.
Thanks for th effort, I see you still haven’t got the question.!!!
1. Question is we don’t see the recommended data sources for our commonly accessed data bases! So I was wondering the machine learning happens only if we start publishing certified data sources.
( request you to keep the conversation around recommended data source. We havent had a certified data sources published to Production yet and we would eventually be getting there!! I totally understand how a certification is done etc.. (pls don’t make any additional effort on explaining on giving links on how to!)
thanks for the links provided, I read them all by heart before creating the post.! Appreciate your efforts.
There is a misunderstanding from your end.I suggest you to go through the links and understand it properly.
