Frederic, some questions.
1) What is the root data source you're connecting to? I assume a database platform of some kind, like Oracle or MySQL.
2) You can choose to embed the credentials for the database connection in your Tableau Data Source, but only if you publish that data source to Tableau Server. There isn't a way to do it from Tableau Desktop when you force a manual refresh. You'll always be prompted for connection credentials (which is a good security practice).
You potentially could automate the process if you want to try to tackle some light coding: https://onlinehelp.tableau.com/v2018.1/pro/desktop/en-us/help.htm#extracting_TDE.html
I'm connecting to a OBDC database with a custom SQL query.
The other thing is that we have another dashboard we are using that doesn't prompt me to enter my password everytime I'm refreshing the extracts. This is why I was confused about why I have to manually enter my password only on this dashboard
Fredéric, are these published data sources & workbooks (e.g., to Tableau Server or Tableau Online) or just local extracts?
Different databases may behave differently when it comes to embedded credentials, and Custom SQL can also be a factor. Tableau's documentation doesn't always make it easy to tell what's actually going on!
So, for the refreshes that do NOT prompt you to enter credentials, how are they different from the ones that DO prompt you?
These extracts are local on both dashboard (the one I am building and the old one I am refering to)
I have the same problem, extracts are failing. I am connecting to presto.
