Yes, I have gotten that error. Not sure what is causing it, but the last time I got it I ended up closing Prep. Restarting the computer. Restarting Prep. My guessing is it is caused by a memory error.
The other thing to do is look at the size of the log files for Prep. My docs... prep repository... logs. When I started getting a lot of strange errors my log files jumped to over 1Gb in size. You can delete everything in the “log“ folder.
It'd be great if you could file a case with Support and share your logs when you hit the error to help us investigate why Prep fails to run correctly sometimes. Garth's suggestions should help you work around the issue but we'd like to understand why you encounter it.
I'm currently getting this error in a flow I built today.
It takes dozens of csv files in groups (using a few wildcard match connections), does some cleaning to each group, and unions the data together.
At any step I can preview in Desktop without issue. But when i try to run the flow to any file type I get the below pic.
I don't know if it matters, but the csv files are located on a shared network folder.
This sounds like a bug - sorry you are hitting it. Could you please file a Support case if you haven't already? We'd really like to be able to investigate the issue further.
I got the same error.
I am not sure how I resolved it. I did these three things things.
1. Check and ensure the data types for each field are similar for each data set before union.
2. Check input settings. I changed the settings and later restored it to default. I think it sort of refresh the data
3. Check that all files using the output file are closed.
I hope this helps.

I am one of the Prep people with Tableau, and I saw this error come up from someone's flow they were trying. We upgraded to 2018.1.2 (available here: http://https://www.tableau.com/support/releases/prep/2018.1.2 ). Once this was done the error above stopped.
Hope this helps!

Tableau Support wound up providing me with this work-around:
- Right-click on the last step before the Output step
- Select "Preview in Tableau Desktop"
- Within Tableau Desktop, select Data -> [your flow name] -> Extract Data OR Export Data to CSV
I can confirm what Doug Carter said.
This issue is fixed in Prep 2018.1.2
I was JUST getting ready to post that Mark! Thanks sir!
