Oh that's a strange one. It is possible that you're experiencing some memory strain on your computer. Can you try closing Tableau then opening it back up? If that doesn't work, maybe try rebooting your computer?
I have all other applications closed and it only happens with the axis. I did reboot my computer a couple of times.
This started happening a couple of days ago, with Tableau 2018.1.0
I have also been having this issue!! Is it possible it could be a bug? Have you had any update on this???
It very well may be. I'd suggest opening a case with Tableau Support.
This is a known issue, I have been talking with Tableau Technical Support and they have discovered there are currently multiple users who are impacted by this same behavior using Tableau Desktop 2018 on a Windows machine.
This behavior is currently under investigation. In the mean time, I suggest you use the 10.5 version, that should not have the issue. If you have your files saved as a 2018 tableau workbook, you can navigate to File>Export as Version> 10.5 to create a 10.5 version of the workbook.
I had similiar issue . I had followed up on issue and found that issue will be fixed in 2018.1.3 check below.
782424 Tableau Desktop
In some environments, the Edit Axis dialog would appear blank or as a black box.
Even though it says they fixed this, I still experience this issue in 2018.2 and 2018.1.5, but only on my Win7 machine. This does not occur on 2018.1.0 on my Win10 machine.
Update 2: I reached out to Tableau support and they responded with:
- Ensure that all instances of Tableau Desktop are closed.
- Open Tableau Desktop by clicking on the Tableau Desktop icon, not by opening a workbook file.
- Once Tableau Desktop has launched, navigate to Help > Settings and Performance.
- Uncheck Enable Accelerated Graphics.
- Close Tableau Desktop.
This worked for me
Update 1: You can edit the XML, but last I checked, Tableau does not offer support when you have made changes to the XML.
The XML has a really logical layout and will be understandable if you know Tableau desktop. Open your twb in a text/code editor such as Notepad++ , then find the proper node:
You will see that I changed the value to PK_MyAxis. The style-rule element will not exist if you have never opened the edit axis dialog, but it is pretty self explanatory and wouldn't be that hard to create (You would just need to see the XML of a fully modified axis to see all your options.)
What is nice about Notepad++ is that you can keep the .twb open in both programs, make changes in Tableau, save, and then Notepad++ will let you know that changes have been made and ask if you want to reload it. This makes it very easy to figure out which elements and attributes you need to change to get the results you want. Take it one step further and just use a code comparison tool such as https://prettydiff.com/
I´m facing a very simillar problem, but instead of black window I get a "Unexpected error happened.." followed by Tableu simply disappearing as it was never opened.
Any news on the matter?
I tried Thomas Rones workaround but it didn´t work for me.
Now I have the black screen too..
Super annoying, I simply can´t work.
Tableau staff, where are you?? This problem is preventing me for doing my job properly.
I know I updated this periodically. Did you try the newest one (turning off accelerated graphics)? If that doesn't work then I would recommend just opening a support ticket.
Tableau changed the rendering of some dialogs and UI elements in Desktop in a recent release. We encountered a few reports where some users are seeing black boxes in these elements due to incompatibilities their computer's graphics hardware.
If you're seeing these black boxes we recommend disabling the hardware acceleration option in the Settings:
1.) In the top menu bar, go to Help > Settings and Performance.
2.) Click on the "Enable Accelerated Graphics" option to disable it. It should now be unchecked in the menu.
3.) Restart Tableau Desktop.
This should solve the black box issue for the vast majority of users. If you are continuing to have problems even with hardware acceleration disabled please let me know and we can try and work through some additional workaround scenarios with you.
