# Finding average

Hi,

just learning different Tableau functions and need to find an average.

This is my data -

So I have an Area (East Gippsland), the Postcodes in that Area, and the amount of Suppliers in each Postcode (coloured column).

I need help with calculating the Average amount of Suppliers in the Area. So would be the total amount of suppliers/amount of postcodes in area, I just can't write it in Tableau!

• ###### 1. Re: Finding average

{fixed area : avg(amount of suppliers)}

this will also work

sum(amount of suppliers)/count(postcodes)

• ###### 2. Re: Finding average

Hi Cheryl

Without seeing the workbook, but try

{fixed [Region]:avg({ fixed [postal code]]:sum([suppliers])})}

If you could attach sample data as packaged workbook,it's much easier.

Thanks,

Shin

Sorry, I can't attach the workbook, it is too large, here is a better screenshot -

• ###### 6. Re: Finding average

{fixed [Area]:avg({ fixed area, [postal code]]:sum([suppliers])})}

Hi Cheryl,

Just add totals to your sheet (Analysis > Totals > Show totals) and then change them to average (Analysis > Totals > Total all using > Average)
