gdb is geographic database.Please check the below it should help you out.

Kumar, I am not sure that I follow. The posts that you recommended are all old or at least much older than Tableau 10.5 I have already downloaded the shape files that I need from the U.S. Census Bureau, and all that I need is to be able to plug in the Census data file. If this is not possible in 10.5, maybe in some later version.

I don't think there is direct connectivity to .gdb file you have mentioned using tableau.
As a workaround the Links i shared earlier talk about converting gdb file(geodatabase) to shape file (.shp).
you can use Argis to convert the gdb to shp file and then use the shp file in tableau.
