Thanks Jeff Strauss, but that didn't help. I executed the following commands:
- tabadmin cleanup
- tabadmin stop
- tabadmin clearcache
- tabadmin cleanup
- tabadmin start
and I'm still sitting with 100GB of files in \DataEngine\Extract\
Any other ideas please?
I went to upgrade this evening and found I had the same issue.
The dataengine extract folder is approx 150+ Gig in size - when I expected it to be <5 Gig.
From looking at the disk space metric, it seems to be consuming more space every day - I'm going to be in trouble shortly....
Did you find a solution?
Andrew and Deve,
I had almost Similar issue on my server worker1 which is the prepared server. Did you found any solution or advice to resolve issue how to get rider every day consuming more space top of the my sever is fallen below 20% now, getting warning messages
Thank you advance.
Hello RK Raj
I have contacted Tableau technical support and they are busy helping me with the problem.
Was the issue already resolved as I am experiencing exactly same situation with my TS?
Any hint would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance

I have the same issue with TS 2018.2 and have been speaking with tech support on this. "Stats for Space Usage" showed everything only takes up 2GB, but my extract folder was >60GB. They suggested it could have something to do with my Revision History settings.
From tech support:
"Each time a revision is saved, a new copy of the extract is saved in the extract folder. Limiting your number of revisions to a number below 25 will be a good solution here for limiting the size of this folder to your desired amount of GB. Information on how to delete past revisions can be found here:
When the administrative view takes into account the total space used by the extracts, it does not factor in extract copies that are saved for when a revision is saved. This is why you are seeing 2GB used for extracts, when in reality each revision that is saved is saving a copy of the extract particular to that revision in the extracts folder."
I took their advice, plus did anything else I could think of to reduce the file size:
- Disabled Revision History
- Cleared Revision History
- Performed full refreshes on all extracts
- Performed tsm maintenance cleanup --all command
- Restarted Tableau Server
This reduced the extract folder by about 25%, but it's still huge. I'll let you know if I find a more effective solution.
We are also facing the same issue, the total dashboards size is at max 50 GB, but the size of /extract directory has increased to more than 1TB.
This is very critical for our business and tableau support is very bad on this, All they are asking to clean the logs and temp files which are not even 1% of the total space.
I have already cleared logs, temp files, revision history. The files inside the /extract directory is indexed so could not do anything there directly!
We are stuck with tableau. Please share if someone finds any solution to this issue ?
