You may want to try the following approach / hack
(it seems to be working though not officially supported):
Edit your Tableau Data Source (*.tds) file with your Teradata connection
and add the following code in the connection <customization> section:
Save the *.tds and use it as a template
when creating new datasources / workbooks.
The customization string would be there.

Ideally it would be great if Tableau could provide us a way to do that server wide in the future to keep our DBA's happy.
