F1, F2 ...Fn will become your header in Imported Data, only if Tableau is not able to find a Header row in Excel.

Audrey Kenn Oct 13, 2017 1:59 PM (in response to Deepak Rai)Thanks, Deepak. However, there is a header row and it matches the old file header row exactly; see last screenshot. What can I do to make Tableau realize it is there. When I used the “review results” in the Data Source panel, it knows it’s there. ???
Thanks,
Audrey

3. Re: Excel data source refresh results in unrecognized "F" columns
Vinnie Ahuja Oct 13, 2017 12:54 PM (in response to Audrey Kenn)1 of 1 people found this helpfulHi Audrey,
I have had this happen to me before. If your case is the same, this is happening because Tableau thinks there is data in a few columns past your actual data. This could be because there once was and it was deleted or something with the formatting. A couple options that may help you...
1) Go into the Excel file that is 'misbehaving'; select and delete the columns immediately to the right of your last column. Select at least as many as the number "F" values you have in Tableau.
2) Make sure there are no hidden rows at the top of your Excel and that your Column Names are in the first row.
3) Try using the "Data Interpreter" (I have never had luck with this, but many others have)
4) Just live with it. You say that your columns are still there, so as long as your data is working correctly, it shouldn't be an issue. Just enter Tableau and select all the "F" fields and delete them.
I hope this helps!
Cheers

Vinnie Ahuja Oct 13, 2017 1:08 PM (in response to Vinnie Ahuja)Another option would be to select all the data in your Excel file and copy it into a new, blank Excel workbook. Save and connect Tableau to this one. Assure there are no extraneous blank columns or rows in the new file.

Thanks a bunch! While your direction didn't directly solve it, it did help me stumble across the answer! So the credit still goes to you! THANKS!
I tried your first two suggestions without success and was going back into Data Interpreter, turning it off since I had already turned it on hoping it would help. Having it disappear and trying to find how to turn it back on and try again, I used the drop-down on the Sheet and found mine was set to Generate Field Names Automatically... when I switched this to Field Names are in the First Row.... it started working again. No idea how that got set, but hopefully this post might help you in the future and others as well.
Thanks again! You rock!
