# Showing Sales YTD and Sales YTD Last year and variance

is it possible to show a Trend Chart:

where  Sales YTD (mark type = Bar), Sales YTD LY (mark type = Dot) and the variance between the (Sales YTD and Sales YTD LY) as a mark type line.  Something similar to the chart below.

any help on this would be really helpfull

Hi, Raghavendra

Is this what you are after?

I attached the workbook with version 10.3 for your reference.

Hi Zhang,

Thanks for the reply , no I am looking something similar to the chart i have shared above. I want the variance to be shown as a line graph

Yes, something similar, is it possible to show a circle instead of a bar for LYYTD. I you can share the steps or the workbook with 10.2 version would be really helpful

Hi, Raghavendra

I don't think it is possible to show LY YTD as circle for this case because dual axis is already applied with bar and line.

Hi Zhang,Thanks again for the reply.

Just wanted to know is it possible in tableau to show LYYTD in circle , YTD in Bar and the Variance in line.

Hi, Raghavendra

I think this is the best we can do

The dash line is the variance.

Hi

As Zhang has already said, you can't easily show bars, lines and circles in one chart.  This is because only one type of mark (bar, line, circle etc) can be displayed per axis.  In order for Zhang to produce the above, he has used a dual axis chart.  The axis on the left is showing the YTD and LYTD and has a mark type of bar and the axis on the right (which Zhang has actually hidden), is showing the variance with mark type of line.

The only other thing you could do if it has to be all on one chart, is make use of reference lines  :

In this image LYTD is on the left hand axis with mark type of circle, and YTD has been added as a reference line per cell, which I've filled the below.  You can't get any vertical border/line/separation though.

Or, here YTD is the grey bar and LYTD is just the reference line (horizontal bar) with no fill below it.

Or simplify, reduce clutter and allow the eye to focus on what's relevant by splitting the variance out into it's own pane, and show LYTD as the circle or line....

10.3 wb attached

Thanks Donna this was also very helpful.

HI there - no problem - however you seem to have marked your own response as correct, which isn't an answer to your actual question.  I've taken the liberty to unmark it.  Please mark either my or Zhang's response as correct so the thread can be closed and any others who have similar queries can quickly see the most valuable response without having to read through all the posts.

Thanks
