Sounds like you're using a dashboard for your .png? I think there are several ways you could do this.
The easiest is probably to make sure the container that holds the map has a background the same color as the ocean. Even if your map grows tinier to fit in the alloted space, the sides should fill in to disguise the empty spaces:
You might also look make sure that your dashboard is not using a fixed view but instead automatic. This may allow it to expand the full length of the screen without those "bookends".

Try going into Map -> Map Layers and checking the 'Repeat Background' checkbox. That should make it so that the basemap tiles and data are repeated to fill the entire bounding box of your map.
Here is what the difference would look like (no repeat background on left, with repeat background on right):
