Need help formatting data for mapping results

    Elizabeth Crisfield

I have data on species presence/absence in different states.

I need to format this so I can map how many species are present in each state, or produce distribution maps for the species.

Right now this data is in excel. The species records are in rows. the columns have different information about the species, but the last columns show the state as the column header, and then the cell is filled in for any species that occurs in the state. It's not just an x or something, if the species is present the cell will have a score to indicate imperilment. (Basically)

Do I need to add an additional column to list the states the species is present in, in order to get this to show up in Tableau? Or is there a way to use the state columns?

      Thanks!
