That is something I haven't experienced. Have you tried switching to FIXED mode and manually selecting the pixel height and width that way? I'm curious what happens if you do that? Also presuming the fixed manual reset worked, try selecting AUTOMATIC again. What happened? Try saving the workbook with AUTOMATIC mode turned on, the reopening? What happened then?
Ii tried all those and they don't work. I had to recreate the dashboards.
It seems as though some of the dashboards resize properly and some don't. I've certainly played with the "automatic" settings, but the are no use. it's a bug of some sort.
So when you rebuilt them in 10.2 everything worked properly regarding FIXED, RANGE and AUTOMATIC modes? I'm going to test going from V10.0.5 to V10.2 this weekend. If I can repeat your experience I'll send some logs to Tableau.
Quite the opposite: They worked fine in 10.0 and then did not work correctly after they were rebuilt in 10.2. It's important to note that some dashboards worked well after the rebuild and other dashboards did not. This project has multiple dashboards in the same file.

Just upgraded to 10.2 today. Same issue, all automatic size dashboards are not automatically sizing. Tinkered with a number of settings and found a work-around. The issue seems to be tied to the device preview, when I turned on the preview the dashboard reverted to full size with the overlay of the smaller device. The solution was to change the preview device type to 'default' then turn off the preview - this seems to restore normal auto-sizing.
Hope this helps!
