Try following these steps: Error "Invalid table name value...table does not exist" | Tableau Software
If that does not solve the issue, is the excel file still there? And did anything change within the file?
Hey Matthew, I tried your link, but it still doesn't work. The original connection was to an excel file in my temp folder, but I've since reconnected to the actual excel file on my desktop and still no luck.
Walk us through your process:
Are you clicking the "+" sign to add a data source?
Sorry about that. Basically I created a dashboard with 2015 data and recently got sent an updated data file for 2016. All I want to do is to change out the data source to the 2016 file, so I click on Data at the top > hover over the data source > Edit data source. Once I get to the data source screen, I click on the existing data source and try to update the connection to the new file and that is where I encounter the above error. Thanks!
First, if the files are structured the same, you may want to simply union them so that no data is lost!
Let's also try it a different way:
- Data>New Data Source
-Select the Excel file
-Two data sources should now be in the "Data Window"
-Right click a data source>Replace Data Source
-Replace the one data source with the other
Now for this to work, all the column headings have to be the same!
Let me know how this works out

Hi David lu,
I guess the sheet name in the excel got changed with the previous one. Please check it once.
Hi Tharashasank, that worked! So if I wanted to update the data source, the excel tabs have to be named exactly the same? Basically, the 2015 file's tab was named Report 2015 and the 2016 file's tab is named Report 2016. When I changed both tabs to be "Report", the connection worked. I did not know that the tab names had to be exactly the same.
