Tableau should be able to recognize the zip code level data, and you don't need a shapefile for that. Can you provide some examples? Even better, upload a Tableau Packaged Workbook.
If you want even greater accuracy to the address level, I'd use a batch geocoder like this one - Batch Geocode
yes of course, here is a packaged workbook. i only have state and zip code for the domestic addresses. for the others i just have city and country.
when i drag city and country on the map i get <3k unknown locations.
but if i add state or zipcode i get more like 25 to 30k unknown. I assume this is because those fields are blank for all the international addresses? I seem to be having trouble getting it to map domestic and international all on one map.

Your data seems really unclean to me. I.e. filter on 'clean zip' for 00646-2216
This zip code has two different cities apparently - Minneapolis and New York. It has a state code of PR?
Then take a look at clean zip 19035-1268
It's got a state code of PA, but a city of Gladwyne and Los Angeles.
Yes you are right, somehow some address fields got copied incorrectly during the data cleanup process. I'm going to go back and redo that and then see whether the data map correctly.
