if you can select the column in Excel and change the data type to "Percent", save and refresh in Tableau..
or within Tableau....
go to "DataSource", view the column and click drop down arrow, select "customer split".
type in % and split type
then flip back to worksheet, but its still a text..
create a "Calculated Field" and use this formula. this should make it a "Measure" and give you the .98 that you are looking for.
you could always click the "show data" button and see what your calculation looks like,
Thanks Jon for the detailed instructions. The data is not in Excel however so I cannot change the data type of the db column.
I was able to use the SPLIT function to get the number:
INT(SPLIT ([COLUMN NAME], "%", 1 ) )/100
I am now able to display the value in Number (decimal) format with the Default Number Format set to Percentage. From there, with the Calculation under Measures, I dropped the Measure Names in the Columns shelf. I am unable to sort however.
right click the category or dimension pill, select sort. the choose the percent as the sort by field..
Just responding to this post because its the first hit on a google search
To return a percentage (as in 98%) when you are generating strings in a calculated field use this;
STR(ROUND(FLOAT(SUM([number]) / TOTAL(SUM([number]) / FLOAT(100)),2))+"%"
