To create borders around numbers or graphs, you will want to work with the border options for Rows and Columns. For example, in the above screenshot, the border around the items sold number is likely created by defining a solid border for the Pane and Header of the Row.
1. Select Format > Borders from the top menu bar.
2. Under Row Divider, click the drop down menu next to Pane on the Sheet tab of the Format Borders pane.
3. Select a solid bar, the desired thickness level, and the color.
4. Repeat for Header.
I've attached an example workbook that uses the steps above to create the lines. I might also suggest taking a look through some of the following sections of the product guide, which provide deeper detail into formatting views - including some best practice recommendations that you might find interesting!
In addition to AB's awesome example, you can format the "Thousands" by right-clicking the axis and formatting it. Quick How To available below:
Thanks you that gave me the display I was looking for.
Thanks for the instructions, i'm doing what you described but its not formatting as per the pic.
Sorry, but i am unable to open the workbook as i'm using an older version of Tableau.
Would you be able to provide a sample workbook? I'm sure we can help you out here!

Sorry for the late reply. The dash was just a picture I found via Google and I've been searching how to recreate.
