sort by order in original excel file

I am attaching a test worksheet. In this worksheet, the rows are sorted in the order of the original excel file because I have an index variable, basically a count from one to the last row. In this test file, it works, but in my real data, I have about 3000 rows and  the index is originally a number. When I use Tableau to change to a string, all the values change to the same value, "GeOeral". Any idea what that is?

Second, in this test file, if I remove my index variable from a worksheet, then the sheet sorts alphabetically by the next column, in this case group. I don't want the index variable displayed in my final presentation, but I want to keep the order of that index. Any suggestions?
