My datasource is a server and I pulled the tde out . Can I connect to tde instead of the server source?
yes you can
Thanks Chris. I uploaded the tdsx to the server and switch the data source to the dashboard. It works. My understanding is that all the extracts are for the local desktop level. Once it is go to the server level, everything we upload are the meta data so that either have the source in the server or tableau is going back to check the local source any way. What do you think?

the process is like this. you build your dashboard on tableau desktop. here you will also build your extract. in this case the extract will reside on your local machine. when you publish your dashboard to tableau server, both the workbook and the data source are published. in this case the extract will now reside on both your local machine and the server. the dashboard, when run from the server, will be utilizing the tableau server data extract.
there is also an option to publish just the data source to tableau server irrespective of the workbook. this utilizes tableau data server. in this case anyone building dashboards can connect to this data source. this introduces the concept of a semantic layer. and again, this data source resides on tableau server.
does that make sense?
Yes Chris. Thanks for the explanation. It makes a lot of sense
When I published the extracted workbook to the server, Shall I publish the data source and workbook separately? What happened was that I successfully published the workbook to the server for the first time while I tried to republish with the change for the second time,. the connection went back to the data source. Since the data sources are not available anymore for the second time, the publishing failed
I thought when I published the first time, the data source get published as well automatically but the workbook as for the data source every time when needing republished.

you do not have to go the approach of publishing the data source and the workbook separately. i dont fully understand what happened on the second publish you mentioned. regardless, you should be able to make changes to the oringinal datasource/workbook and simply overwrite any previous publishes
It turns out that I did not successfully changed the original data source to the one in server last time and I rechecked after reading your response . It works out.
Thanks a lot Chris
I was reading this post and wondering if you could help here.
I have a functional workbook with 4+ dashboards and published (as extract) it on server (without publishing the data source)
I noticed that the dashboards published on server do not mirror the alignments, formats etc as on desktop and hence reformatted the workbook with multiple iterations using the edit in the workbook server (since I have creator access). Now I need to still make some changes in the latest modified workbook on server so I tried to download the reformatted workbook to open in the tableau desktop.. But I keep getting the error - data source 1 cannot be connected, so I published the source separately now and still get the same error.
also, if my clients want to download the workbook from the server on their end this is always going to not work? please guide here.
I have downloaded the workbook as twbx and it opens - querying window. loading window.. then says connecting to database.... and after a few minutes - says timeout.. this is repeating every time I try it..
