# Sum for a measure is showing wrong value

Hi,
I'm working on Ronaldo Vs Messi data and data source is in Excel format. When total number of Red Cards for both players is calculated in Excel it's showing as 8 but when the same measure is dragged in tableau it's sum is shown as 48.

Any help would be appreciated.

Post a packaged workbook.  The answer likely depends on what your data looks like and how you are using it in the sheet.

One of the basic reasons of data getting multiplied is incorrect join conditions which is very common mistake that we do. Check if you have a join in your data and try to re-look at join condition.

It doesn't have any joins.

Attached is the twbx file.

Help me locate what should be 8 but is 48 on the sheet.

• ###### 6. Re: Sum for a measure is showing wrong value

I see that the data is pivoted.  Was that necessary?   The red cards measure is repeating for each pivoted field.   You have 6 pivoted fields, and the 8 fouls are repeating 6 times.

It is not apparent why the pivot was needed.

I used pivot for the "PIVOT" worksheet where you can get various measures and dimensions visualized in a single worksheet.

• ###### 8. Re: Sum for a measure is showing wrong value

I'll ask again.  The only 48 I see on the first sheet is Ronaldo's 2010 total goals.  And the data in the data source shows 48 total goals for 2010 as well.

What should be 8 that is improperly displaying as 48?

Ah.. I see.  You don't need to pivot to do that.  Pivoting is not always a great solution in situations like this, nor is it necessary.   Use your spreadsheet as is, and use the "Measure Names" pill as a filter instead.

(If you use your data as is, you will need to use the pivot field names as a filter every place, and it still may result in undesirable results.)

Hi,

Can you tell me how i can use measure names to have dropdown list of various dimensional fields which when selected shows the dashboard for the selected field in the dropdown?

Thanks

Sherry -- Before moving on to a new issue, you should let the community know if your original issue was resolved.

The threads on this forum aren't just for the people asking the question.  Hundreds (thousands) of people search the forum for answers to their own questions before starting a their own question.  It helps those people to see the green check mark next to the title of threads that come up when they do a search.

If your original question is answered, let the forum know what that answer is, and mark the reply that supplied the answer as "Correct Answer".

And then, if you have a totally new question, it's best to start a new thread for it.  Based on what you've asked today, that seems to be the case.  That way separate issues are searchable as separate issues.
