What version of Tableau are you using? With Tableau 10, this process is much simpler: you can create a group on the map by simply selecting countries you would like to group and creating a group of countries. If this doesn't work, I can help you with the other steps as well.
I'm using Tableau 9.3 I'm afraid.
Thanks for helping!
OK, no worries. From your question, looks like you got stuck at Step 4 because "this isn't a calculated field." Looking at the tutorial, my guess is you've accidentally used the wrong field. It's asking you to click on the arrow for your "Group Sales" field (i.e. the window calculation you created to calculate sales) and not your Group field (i.e. the group of countries you are trying to group).
Does that make sense?
Thank you so much for your continued help,
1) Do you mean "group profit" instead of "group sales"
2) I think I was unclear in my original question - the field in the knowledge base document is calculated. As such, they can make it report at the region level by altering the calculation. My field isn't calculated - so I cannot use the same method
A simplified version of my data is
And I want to change it to
Such that the ASEAN countries act single block of countries. The way that multiple states form "Northwest" in http://kb.tableau.com/articles/knowledgebase/filled-map-custom-groups are grouped.
I appreciate that I could just change my data table, but ideally I would like to make it simple for the user to group and ungroup these countries.
Happy to help! (although so far I'd argue I haven't done too much ). To your points though:
1. Yep, definitely meant Profit. My fault.
2. Not sure why things aren't working. When you say that your field isn't calculated, would you please expand on that? Looks like you're going for a measure of risk by country. Are you looking at average risk? Total risk?
Once we resolve this issue, we can build out the rest of it.
By not calculated I mean I'm just reading a field out of the file - whereas their field was a sum - I've shown the two screenshots below. On the left I'm able to click on "Edit table calculation" on the right I'm unable to so. Below I've included a cropped screenshot from an excel (all data is dummy data)
Ah, gotcha. So you will need to create a new calculated field that uses your Risk Share field (Step 2 on the Knowledge Base article). The syntax will be WINDOW_SUM(SUM([Risk Share])). Then, after using that new calculated field, you'll be able to continue following the tutorial.
Happy to help out!
