That looks like it would solve half my problem, how to get text to appear below the table. Thanks very much.
But the other half is still: if Tableau sees anything other than numbers in the cells, the column is read as text. How do I get tableau to read a table that has numbers and non numbers (e.g., "*" and "s").
Thanks very much.

I am not sure about this trick, but my initial idea was to use Annotate as seen below, but formatting may not meet your requirement. How about, using another column with calculated field that has different criteria that will point to footnotes in caption? :
if group='one' and percent <12% then 'See notes'
elseif group='two' and percent <15% then 'See notes'
elseif group='three' and percent <0% then 'See notes'
else 'Ok' end
That looks like a good idea. This is a calculated field? I haven't learned that yet, so I'll work on that. Is it too difficult to have numbers and non numbers in the table?

Well, unfortunately, I don't think it will. I presented a simplified table, but the actual table I have has probably 60+ rows, and also a couple of columns, and it would take a lot of caption notes to list each exception. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Also, the other thing I showed in the first table is that some cells have a number and then *. Tableau reads the cells with the * as text and nulls them too.
It looks like Tableau cannot read tables that have numbers in some cells in a column, symbols in some cells in the same column and then read the numbers in that column as numbers?
I just wanted to check back with you if solution provided here answered your question or not. If yes, please mark as correct answer or as assumed answer if you find your solution so that it is cleared from question board that needs to be answered as well as other users in future can benefit from it. If not, please feel free to ask for help. Thank you.
I can only assume this was some kind of automated response, as my last posting seemed pretty clear, that the answers given so far did not solve my problem. I do greatly appreciate everyone trying though.
