I love this whitepaper about scalability. It helps me put things into perspective and understand better, i am sure you'd enjoy it as well, as it covers many of your questions.

Lets say we have 50 K users, out of which 40K are normal employees and 10K consists of BA and management. Now for us, for these 40K users we need to display reports(lets say same report) consisting of data based on there permissions/roles. Now these reports can be viewed all day long may be concurrently by most of users. Based on this having following questions:
1. What should be the server config/setup for this condition?
2.How much single Tableau server can scale under this situation?
3. What are the ways through which this situation can be addressed?
4. lets say we are publishing these reports and users are accessing these over web through browser. Will there be any thresh hold/limit on number of users for this?
1. It helps to know the actual concurrency, that is, how many possible users at any given time will be hitting the Server. Maybe 10 during a 1 minute period? 10K? Everyone?
2. My wife, a server validation engineer, said that the last server she worked on had 4 CPUs with 8 cores each and could take up to 48 DIMMs. So 32 cores or 64 if using hyperthreading and up to 1.5TB RAM. How's that for hardware scaleability? Tableau can take it but can your wallet?
3. If you run out of space going upwards then you slap on more nodes (expand outwards).
4. Not if your Server licensing is core-based. It's just a matter of what the hardware environment can handle

Mahesh Bairagi Oct 13, 2016 9:30 PM (in response to Toby Erkson)Thanks Toby. For point 1 we are expecting none less than thousand/s users' concurrency.

Mahesh Bairagi Oct 13, 2016 10:48 PM (in response to Obed Tsimi)Thanks Obed. Though document mentions about user or hardware limits, I am more looking into configuration as per our user limit i.e. how many nodes/servers will be needed and what considerations we have to accommodate.

I think it's best to contact a sales representative and have them help out as they can ask the right questions to determine what would be a good start.
