What criteria would you be using to create the groups?
Either institution name or ID#.
Well, those would the the fields to create the groups on, but I was wondering how you would decide a college is in one group over some other group. Since there are thousands of colleges, I would think you will have to set up some rules that will automatically categorize a college. My suggestions would depend on what those rules are.
The groups have already been decided by our Board so there's no rules based on criteria other than college name.
And how are those peer groups being provided to you? Are they part of the same/different CSV? Did they email you the list so now you have to enter the peer groups manually?
I could tell you how to do this manually, but you will spend the whole day creating the peer groups on Tableau.... Much better if the info was in CSV format.
The best scenario is you have a file which contains the following boolean columns:
Group 1 | Group 2 | Group 3
1 | 0 | 1
0 | 0 | 1
1 | 1 | 0
Where each row corresponds to a school ID. If you do not have the data in this format, I would recommend you get it into that data first.
Interesting, I wouldn't have thought of that. The peer group lists were given to me as just lists of institution names, but I've already looked up ID numbers, so I can add those into the existing file.
Can I create 1 filter with three groups though?

Yeah, just create a parameter called Peer Group that has three options, Groups 1-3, and create this calculated field which would replace the Institution Name field wherever you have it:
if [Group 1] and [Peer group] == 'Group 1' then [Institution Name]
elseif [Group 2] and [Peer group] == 'Group 2' then [Institution Name]
elseif [Group 3] and [Peer group] == 'Group 3' then [Institution Name]
Edit: this is assuming you have set the fields Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 as a boolean dimension.
I'm really sorry if I'm being dense here, but I don't think that will work. I don't want to replace institution name, I still want to see it. Here's a picture if that would help.
So right now in filters I have the BOT peer group. I also have a GCS peer group and a WAP peer group. So ideally what would happen is that the end user could select which peer group they want to see, then it would show the names of all of those schools and those bars.
You will still see the names - the calculated field just returns the names after filtering
Dana, please either ask me a follow-up question, or mark my answer as correct. Two things happen when you mark an answer as correct:
1. Others will be able to see my answer more easily, and
2. I score precious Internet points.
Matt - Happy to give you internet points, but I ended up talking to someone else and kind of mashing up a few different responses to get what I needed. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Did my answer not work out? Could I hear what you ended up doing?
You could just mark my reply as 'helpful' and mark an own answer of yours as correct
