# Diffentiating Numeric, Alpha Character and Symbols

I have a set of name that starts with Number,alphabets or special charcters .I want to separate them and align to perform the calculation.How so I acheive it

Ex - Names

1) ABC Co

2) 77 Stars Inc

3) ** PVt limited

You might try something like:

IF ASCII(LEFT([Names], 1)) >= 65 AND ASCII(LEFT([Names], 1)) <= 122 THEN "Alpha"

ELSEIF ASCII(LEFT([Names], 1)) >= 48 AND ASCII(LEFT([Names], 1)) <= 57 THEN "Numeric"

ELSE "Symbol"

END

Or, if you only want to have the numeric part for a calculation, then

INT(SPLIT([Product Name], " ", 1))

will give you the numeric value of the first "word" and NULL otherwise.  You can either filter out the NULL values or apply other logic.  Aggregations will eliminate the NULL values.

Thanks Joshua, That was so helpful but where to perform the remaining Calcation ....Do we use a nested IF or A Case in this case

It would depend on the specifics of how you want to use the result.  I may need more details around that.
