# Average Equals "1"?

Hi All,

Very new to Tableau.  I was playing with some data and am trying to calculate an average.  When I use SUM(Number of Records), everything seems to come up fine:

But when I change the measure to 'AVG(Number of Records)', it goes to "1" across the board:

Wonder what I am missing here...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,
A

I would create a calculated field as     Sum([Number of Records])/Countd([Dv Assigned To])  and remove this field from the sheet (ie. LOD).

Right click on month and try changing this to a discrete

If this doesn't help please upload a sample workbook and I can have a proper look at this and let you know what you may be doing wrong

Hey Adam, the Number of Records field is an automatically generated calculated field in Tableau that equals 1 for all rows. If you right click the pill and select Edit you will see that the "formula" it uses is simply the number 1. So naturally, when you take an average of all those 1s, Tableau returns 1.

If you want to see an annual average of all the monthly sums of Number of Records, you could try making a new calculated field with something like WINDOW_AVG(SUM([Number of Records])) instead.

Here is a sample workbook which John explained.
