    union in 9.3

I understand how the union works in 9.3 version. But I do not see all the excel files in the window where we do the union. Tableau asks me to choose only 1 particular file and so once i choose that, i don't see other excel files in that dialog box to do the union. why?

As you see in the screenshot. Only the excel file named Data 2016.xls is visible and I don't see my Data 2015 .xls and data 2014.xls to do the union

Sorry, I misunderstood. The unioning of files within a directory only applies to CSV files, not excel.

You can do one thing just consolidate your excel files into one workbook separated by sheets. Lets say Sheet1 would be for

Data 2016, Sheet2 for Data 2015 and so on. Then connect consolidated file in tableau.

See the screen shot. Once you drag other sheets it will union. Let me know If you've any question.

we are getting excel files every month...so I wanted to see if union can directly append instead of manual copy paste ...but that's possible only with csv or text I suppose

Yeah that's true union of files within a directory only applies to csv or text files, not excel. However you can get the union option in excel also If you've data in multiple sheets in a single excel workbook. Hope you get my point.

Yup..Got your point. But  That would also require a manual copy paste from multiple source excel files

Why do manual copy paste? You can write a macro to consolidate your excel files in a single workbook separated by sheets.

Your example does not cover unioning multiple Excel files as per the original posters request.
