If I recall correctly - with SQL Server you have two options:
- Embed password during publishing (Why are you against this? Downloaded workbooks or datasources won't have password stored in them.)
- Use service account i.e. credential of the user that is running Tableau Server service (our company uses this option)
Hi, thanks for the response. Could you please explain the server run as account? When I publish using this option I get an extract failed message the next day. How does this need to be set up?

Usually, in cases like this Tableau Server administrator and your DBA would work together to create a dedicated user account (in company's Active Directory), grant that account all the necessary database permissions and would configure Tableau Server to be running under that account.
