What version are you using (both Desktop and Server)?
What authentication type do you have on Server?
This happens to me occasionally. What happens is that I enter in my password to reconnect to our Tableau Server, and then the 'processing request' sits there and hangs. What I've found is that it hangs because there is a second dialog behind it that is also awaiting my password (my guess is that this happens when I have multiple datasources - not 100% sure). The trick to getting past that hanging status bar is ALT+F4, which closes that status bar, thus allowing me to enter my password again, connecting me back to the server. I have found that this works when my laptop is connected to the dock and I'm using my standard USB keyboard...but when I try this on my laptop when it's not in the dock (thus using my laptop's keyboard), ALT+F4 just mutes my laptop, so I'm stuck in those cases.
Hi Clement - You can use tabadmin set option for the vizqlserver.session.expiry.timeout and set it for a longer time if you're finding your sessions time out. http://onlinehelp.tableau.com/current/server/en-us/help.htm#tabadmin.htm
At the time of writing the question I was in 9.2.4 and authentication mode was based on local accounts.
End of last week, for various reasons, I decided to fully reinstall Tableau, upgrade to 9.3.3, and move to Domain based accounts authentication.
While I was using Tableau Desktop yesterday in similar conditions than before migration (long idle time during the day), seems like Tableau was able to reconnect to data sources hosted on Tableau server without hanging.
I will mark this topic as answered for now and will let you know in case it occurs again in the new setup.
Thank you for your support
I'll check the session timeout too, good hint.
Regarding the Alt+F4 to close the status bar and reach the password dialog box, I tried once, but I was still exposed to the status bar
But your comment about "my guess is that this happens when I have multiple datasources" rings a bell. I indeed have about 8 data sources in my workbook. Next time I face the issue, I'll try to use Alt+F4 to close the 8 status bar (one per data source) and maybe I'll reach the password dialog box when all status bars have been closed...
Will keep you posted.

Clement: this just happened to me again this morning.
I have a Tableau workbook that connects to two sources. Yesterday when I left the office I left the file open. Upon returning this morning it prompted me to reconnect. I entered in my password and pressed OK, and Tableau hung at this screen, with the counter not moving from 0:06:
If you look closely, you can see another box in the background. If I move the 'Processing Request' box you can see what it is:
This is another datasource. When I try to hit "Yes", I am not allowed as the Processing Request window is "on top". With my laptop in my dock, I can hit Alt+F4 to close the Processing Request box and hit Yes on the dialog box below. Note that hitting "Cancel" does nothing. You have to hit Alt+F4.
Once I hit YES I am reconnected and can continue with my work.
Hopefully this helps.
