I tried same thing many times, but always struggling with the lack of chance to create step function line charts.
To achieve step function charts, I think I need to create another time table master data source to have all the "Bin" as data.
Anyways, if you are O.K. with smoothed line charts, I want to introduce one idea to align X-Axis between Line and Gantt on Dashboard.
This might be something you already tried, though.....
Duplicate Data source.
Then Pivot the Data with Start and End Time.
Link the two data source with Category.
On primary Data source, add calculated field and create Gantt chart.
[End Time - Start Time]
[End Time]-[Start Time]
On secondary data source, Create three calculated fields.
[Count End Time]
countd(if [Pivot field names]="End Time" then [Category] end)
[Count Start Time]
countd(if [Pivot field names]="Start Time" then [Category] end)
[Countd End -Start]
[Count Start Time]-[Count End Time]
Then Hide Category. // Adding category is make it easy to align axis range.
Because both data source's date (or time) is already align with Min and Max, I think two charts have pretty close range already.
You can modify the width of Header a little.
To be continued........
But , fundamental problem is that line chart is not what I want.. I want a step function type charts.
So here is another approach.
I used BIN to fill the Gap.
nd draw a chart with area.
Draw Gantt-like chart with area chart.
The BIG problem in this approach is I lost header and Label...
So aligning axis problem still exist. and mouse hover does not bring tooltips on Area chart.
The merit of below chart though, is Gantt-like and bottom area is 100% aligned.
Sorry for confusing you guys with poor/complicated explanation..

Your latter approach (on Sheet 7) is promising.
I've played with it a bit and come with a complimentary one, using Bars.
It could be even better looking with a fixed-width bar option of Tableau 10.
Please find the attached.
Great ! Yuri.
You are the MAN.
I still have large opportunities to learn!
When aligning two views on a dashboard -- yes, it definitely helps.
What I've tried is to make a single view which mimic both Gantt & Line/Area (with Bars).
Just the opposite of what I've used to make (mimic Bars with Gantts :-)
Shin, you're welcome.
Wish I were as passionate about digging to the roots as yours.
Yuri, and others for your info.
I finally I realized what I had missed.
Sheet 7 is my initial Viz
This was the reason I gave up this approach initially....
and Sheet 22 is what Yuri provided.
Everything else are Exactly same to me!!!
But from the further investigation I realized it's same OTHER THAN ........
It's VERY easy after I know the fact. Only one button !!!!
Actually all the things in the world works similarly. That's why I / we need to keep studying!!!
I'm much smarter than I was yesterday.
