Adding together separate Ranks from a Table Calculation

Hi All,

First time posting here so I hope this is OK.

I'm trying to add together several Table Calculations, all of which are Ranks of separate measures.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Sam

Yes, nearly anything is possible -- can you post a sample TWBX (packaged workbook) using Superstore Sales or a similar sample dataset, along with a mockup of your desired results/output?  This will help you ensure you get the best possible help from volunteers on this community forum.  Cheers!

Here you go.

I essentially want to add the 3 x ranked columns together to get a total.

I'm not sure I completely understand -- are you just trying to show a "4" value for each Rank total?  Knowing your expected results would help me understand - mockups are great!

Can you also explain why you want to see that summation of ranks -- what purpose does that serve?

Also, I highly recommend this video on Table Calcs -- you're going to need to apply a Table Calculation on top of the existing measures, which means you'll need to give those measures names, etc.  In other words, there are several steps you'd need to take to get a Total of 4 for those Rank measures -- my solution would include using a separate worksheet for the grand total row, but I'm not going to do that if it will not meet your needs.

The specified item was not found. -- See the video "Setting up for Table Calculation Success"

Cheers and good luck!

More recommended reading on how Totals work inside Tableau (3 part series -- VERY educational, and from the same author as the "Setting up for Table Calc Success" Think Data Thursday video mentioned above.

I unified its ranking by adding any ranking and creted a new classification from the lowest to highest

Just saying - how nice to see you Matt Lutton

• 8. Re: Adding together separate Ranks from a Table Calculation

Hi Matt,

It would be a value of 4. So for example if Furniture is 3rd in profit, 2nd in sales and 2nd in quantity then Furniture would have a score of 7 (3+2+2). We use it at my work for rankings Tables for KPIs.

I'll check out the videos as well.

Thanks very much for you help.

Luciano - Thanks for this, unfortunately I'm getting an error message on this end saying Tableau can't load the file.

Here is the app in 9.2.4 version.

Hi Sam,

Here's what you'll need to do.

1. "Materialize" the table calculations you use to find the rank. By "materialize", I mean save them as part of the data source. To do that, just grab your table calc pill from the measure values card, Ctrl+click, then drag it into the data pane on the left. It'll pop in there and you can give it a name. Do this for all the ranking table calcs.

2. Create a new calculated field and just add them all together.

See attached workbook for example. (New calc field is "Rank Totals")

Nice job, Christina -- this is precisely what I was describing Sam -- by adding the Table Calculations to your Data Pane, you can then use them in other calculations.  I was thinking you'd need to use a Table Calc on top of the ranks, but it appears that you may just add them together.

Thanks for the example, Christina -- I haven't had much time to devote to building out Forum solutions lately, but I still like to lend a hand where I can!

Yeah, I was bracing for a fight, but it turned out to be as simple as I'd hoped! Luckily row-level calculations are pretty straightforward.
