What's your original data source for your transactional data or data which contains the item you need to group on?
It's a table column of unique descriptors that need to be grouped into several buckets.
As an analogy, think of X number of types of red wine that need to be put into a "red wine" bucket. I don't have a definition table that links these names to red wine, so I have to do it manually.
I'm actually wondering what your source is for your data, not the classifications.
I may have misunderstood your requirement but I interpreted your scenario as being something like;
- Connect to an Excel file containing transactional data for sales of widgets. Columns including sale date, order number, customer name, product name
- Need to join product name to a list of classifications based on the product name to determine a grouping.
If this doesn't match your approach, perhaps you can provide some sample data and a Tableau Packaged Workbook.
I'm looking to do a similar thing - did you ever work out how to do this? Is it just by importing the extra sheet and doing a left join?
A left join to a lookup table would work out best. If your base table has a
product ID for example, you want to join another file which has two
columns; the Product ID and your custom Grouping.
