Tableau Server (Version 9300.16.0315.0125) encountered an error while working with this worksheet.
Is there a way to change the timeout limits for that?
Hi Heiko -
Do you have a feel for how far back your data goes? (when was the last time you did a backup or tabadmin cleanup - both of these truncate http_requests back to last 7 days).
If you have tons of it, you might do better to lean on an (undocumented) Desktop-ready version of the same workbook (which can be found in C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\<version> \wgserver\z5\WEB-INF\admin)
You can open this puppy up, save it elsewhere and then use it to build an extract off of the postgres data - it'll perform better than the live database (which is designed more for OLTP than reporting)
You'd have to see exactly what the error is (via logs), and you might be able to increase some timeouts to allow a long-running viz to complete, but you'll want to decide whether you want to allow "reporting queries" to churn against Tableau's metadata store for long periods of time
BTW, you might resolve this quite easily by executing tabadmin cleanup - which truncates data back to 7 days - and you might not WANT to do that.
Thanks a lot for your answers.
Yeah, the cleanup will be the option after gathing the information this time.
I will take a look against the db connection.
Tanks for the hint with the workbook!
My concern would be why this is happening to a Tableau Server report in the first place Maybe this points to a need: Another process like a backgrounder? More RAM to allow in-memory work perform better? In other words it could be a hardware or setup issue, at least that's what it seems like to me.
I've seen the same basic behavior generally when there is tons of data in the posgres database - it just takes time for that little postgres process that gets spawned to churn through it all. Why are you thinking about the Backgrounder? I'm not sure a follow.
Russell, it was just a WAG, no specific reason.
