Can you tell me what size your back up, and a rought estimate of the content of your server as far as workbook volume and the number of data sources that have been published?
The Tableau data itself is usually retained within the program files
Does this folder exist?
The back up file is of 6 GB and we would be having around 50 workbooks and around 15 data sources.
I have realized that, during the up gradation I have installed it in a different folder other than C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server\
Now I could see those 8.3 and 9.2 sub folders under
Uninstalled and installing 9.2 again in the right folder now. Hope the backup restore now would bring all those lost workbooks back.

It did not work. Whatever I do, I am not able to retrieve all those workbooks.
Installations and backup restorations were successful with out any errors or exceptions. But I was not able to get back the server that is lost.
Im struggling to understand how their could be an issue if the installation
does not display any errors.
An upgrade should simply require an uninstall of old Server version, and an
installation of the new server executable in the same position as the
previous which as you have said quite correctly, would provide 2 folders,
easily identifying the previous version and the new version.
No data is deleted (workbooks etc) during an uninstall as essentially an
upgrade is only a new wrapper and overlayed as such on the workbooks that
as previously discussed is located in the program data folder and not the
program files location.
Can you provide me some details as to the steps you have carried out and
any deletions that have taken place?
Are you installing this on a new drive or anything?
Also, is the server a VM?

Sorry for replying late.
The problem was that the back up file is place outside the the folder C:\tableau\tableau server\9.2\bin
When I ran the restore command, it did not give me any error saying that the back up file is not found.
Now everything is good and working.
