Right click in the brand column (say, near the text for sample1) and choose format. Then choose the shading for that column. That will put the entire column in one color. I don't think that you can select different colors for Sample1, Sample2, but you can select a different color for your Grand Total - you'll have to go into for format menu (click the paint can), and choose a different color for the Grand Total Header.

It does help, in sense that it confirms I can't do what I'm looking to do automatically
I supposed I will simply have to create a dashboard and use text boxes with shading to achieve the effect I'm looking for.
