Saving Backup file on another system while taking backup

    Su ve

      Hi,

I have scenario where I need to take the backup of the Tableau Server Data and save that backup file on another system.

I need to save the file while taking the backup itself as we are short of disk space on the system where tableau server is hosting.

And also while restoring from that backup (saved on another system) file, is that we use the normal way of restoring?

Is there any way to do this? If so how to do it?

      Thanks,

      Su Ve

within the backup command, you may be able to specify a UNC path that has a share created within it.  I haven't personally tested it with tabadmin, but it's something to try.

          tabadmin backup \\networkpath\Sharelocation\filebackup.tsbak

And if you want temp files to be saved somewhere else as well, then you can add the -t \\networkpath\Sharelocation

And then within the restore, you could similiarly use the UNC path

          tabadmin restore \\networkpath\Sharelocation\filebackup.tsbak

          tabadmin commands

            ...

Just to confirm, Jeffrey is correct as we have our backup saved to a different network drive.  Here's the snippet of code we use:

            @ECHO OFF
            REM QA
REM  by Toby Erkson, April 2015
            REM  Adapted from http://kb.tableausoftware.com/articles/knowledgebase/server-maintenance
            REM  No inputs required.
            SET sPath=\\corpnas02\tableau
            SET sLogPath=D:\Application\Tableau\Tableau_Server\logs
            SET sLogFileName=backup.log
            SET dDate=%DATE:/=%

            ECHO.
            ECHO. >> %sLogPath%\%sLogFileName% 2>&1
            ECHO ----- BEGIN Daily %dDate:~-4%-%dDate:~4,2%-%dDate:~6,2% %TIME% ----- >> %sLogPath%\%sLogFileName% 2>&1
            ECHO Backing up Tableau Server...
ECHO Backing up Tableau Server... >> %sLogPath%\%sLogFileName% 2>&1
            tabadmin backup %sPath%\daily_backup_QA.tsbak >> %sLogPath%\%sLogFileName% 2>&1
            ...
